Things you learn from hurricane Ike...
Repost from Tasha...
1. Coffee and frozen pizzas can be made on a BBQ grill.
2. No matter how many times you flick the switch, lights don't work without electricity.
3. My car gets 23.21675 miles per gallon, EXACTLY (you can ask the people in line who helped me push it).
4.Kids CAN survive 4 days or longer without a video game controller in their hand.
5. Dogs are even more irritating without power.
6. He who has the biggest generator wins.
7. Women CAN actually survive without doing their hair- you just wish they weren't around you.
8.A new method of non-lethal torture- showers without hot water.
9. There are a lot more stars in the sky than most people thought.
10. TV is an addiction and the withdrawal symptoms are painful.
11. A 7 lb bag of ice will chill 6-12 oz Budweiser's to a drinkable temperature in 11 minutes, and still keep a 14 lb. turkey frozen for 8 more hours.
12. There are a lot of dang trees around here.
13. Flood plane drawings on some mortgage documents were seriously wrong.
14. Aluminum siding, while aesthetically pleasing, is definitely not required.
15. Crickets can increase their volume to overcome the sound of 14 generators.
16. People will get into a line that has already formed without having any idea what the line is for.
17. When required, a Lincoln Continental will float, doesn't steer well but floats just the same.
18. Tele-marketers function no matter what the weather is doing.
19. Cell phones work when land lines are down, but only as long as the battery remains charged.
20. Your neighbors are fed from a different transformer than you, and they are quick to point that out!
21. Hampers were not made to contain such a volume.
22. If my store sold only ice, chainsaws, gas and generators... I'd be rich.
23. Price of a can of soup rises 200% in a storm.
24. Your water front property can quickly become someone else's fishing hole.
25. Tree service companies are under appreciated.
26. I learned what happens when you make fun of another states' blackout.
27. MATH 101: 30 days in month, minus 6 days without power equals 30% higher electric bill ?????
28. Drywall is a compound word, take away the "dry" part and it's worthless.
29. I can walk a lot farther than I thought.
30. Just because you evacuated doesn't mean you are free from not having your electricity taken away from you because of what you ran from ...
31. No one reads the "Read before using" instructions on generators ... Hence 85% of all house fires during IKE !
32. That SOUTH EAST TEXAS will always be over looked ...
33.People will always compare the Hurricane to "Katrina"
34.FEMA is not a trailer company !
35.Moving 1 mile in 3 hours is COMPLETELY over rated !
36.YOU will drink the nastiest alcohol there is ever known to man to put up with your extended family "just one more day"
(It sounds like Tasha had it much worse than I did. But she got her power back sooner! LOL)

Want to help a hurricane victim? (No, not me!)
I spoke with my sister in law today, she had 3 feet of water in her house in Bridge City - the water originated from the toilet... the storm surge caused the sewer to back up and flooded the house with sewage.. GROSS!
Anyway, in addition to losing the use of her house and most of her stuff, she lost ALL of her work clothes, and my nephew lost all of his toys. If you have some gently worn business/casual clothes (she is a college professor in her 30's) you could spare (size 11 or 13 pants, size M shirts) would you let me know?
Also, my nephew loves trucks, Power Rangers, Spiderman and John Deere. If you have something that a 6 year old could play with, I'd love to pass it along to him.
Thanks for your consideration!
MAYBE ...
Today, the dog got the scare of his life - about 8 linemen came over the back fence to assess the damage from the tree that's on our house... I knew that was going to happen!
Anyway, they came here to make notes about the number of telephone poles they will need, and etc... and said they would be back tomorrow with their cranes... so if that actually happens, I should have some interesting video and pics for tomorrow!

Hurricane Ike
Hi everyone! Since I don't know how long my Internet connection will stay up, I'm posting here in hopes of reaching more people who want to know what's up at our house.
We weathered the storm almost ok... until after the eye-wall came through and picked up the pine tree that was on our neighbors house and planted it on ours. Actually, there are 3 trees tangled in the power lines and 2 resting on our house. One of them (the big pine) knocked several holes in the roof.
That was ok, there were some leaks, etc.. until the next morning at 5am when the thunderstorm came through and SOAKED Avery's room and several places on the first floor.
The word is that we will have power back by Monday. But there is a serious issue in our back yard with these trees - they are tangled up in the powerlines that make up the grid in our neighborhood... this will not be easy to fix. I can't remove the tree because of the powerlines, and I can't cover the holes in the roof until the tree is gone... and I can't begin the clean up until the roof is covered, otherwise there will be new places for water to come from and that will suck.
So in the mean time, I am very thankful for the weather! our generator! and the fact that we didn't lose water for very long. We have a gas water heater so we can even shower. I will be glad to get off this air mattress though...
TTFN!
Oh - I posted a pic on MySpace, and if I can I will come back and add some to this...

Stupid IKE!
The Eagles concert has been postponed to Oct 2nd. That's ok - I wasn't really looking forward to the traffic JAM getting home from there anyway! (and a big HUGE THANK YOU to the band for not canceling completely!)
Someone should go slap the people down the street who parked their travel trailer (5th wheel) on the bend... get that tornado magnet OUT of here!
I'm so sick and tired of the scare tactics on the news .... I guess it's required for people who think nothing is wrong, but for those of us who CAN read, and are sitting at home "sheltering in place"... it's annoying...
